Leah Huang is a visual artist born in Wuhan, China, and currently living and working in Brooklyn, NY
Since she was five, she had been obsessively drawing the world around her. After graduating from Boston College with a Marketing and Studio Arts degree in 2014, she had immersed in a full time career in luxury fashion, but she wanted more - turning off her creative brain and impulses became increasingly impossible. Painting, drawing, and film photography engulfed the days and hours outside of “work”. She eventually exited her path in Corporate America, devoting the full heart, mind, and hands to her practice.
Leah’s work began as an exploration to investigate the emotional spaces in between; between closeness and distance, fear and desire, questions and answers. This deeply intimate process which has been a reflection of the artist’s personal life, is both an excavation and a palimpsest. On the two dimensional surface, it is translated to a combination of gestural and figurative approaches, where one often finds lines and layers of precision meeting spontaneous fields of colors. Over time, this practice has been refined by using organic shapes around her as source material, and connecting them to fables and myths that have crossed her path, including those from her native culture of China that she has reconnected with, since her grandfather’s passing three years ago.
